if you want your iris's to bloom again next year you should keep the leaves on till they turn brown. I know they won't look too nice until this happens, but what's happening is that the bulb is continuing to take nutrients from the soil to keep the leaves green. when the leaves finally die off all the nutrients are left in the bulb, thus giving you a better flower next year. I had a next door neighbor from Holland who was a retired nursery owner tell me that they would braid the leaves so they wouldn't look as bad while they waited for the leaves to turn brown. I tried it, with all my bulb flowers actually, and because the leaves are laying flat on the ground once you've braided them they really don't look to bad. hope this helps
Can i mow off my iris after they are done blooming?
Try the forums at http://www.suburbangarden.com/ they are geared more toward this type of questions
Reply:If these are German irises I wouldn't advise you to mow them. The rhizomes are at ground level. Running a mower over them would cut the rhizomes which would then leave them susceptible to disease or worse yet death.
Reply:yes you can...this is more time saving that cutting each one individually...wait until the bloom has died...set the deck on your mower as high as it will go then mow over the iris.....i know many ppl who do this and theirs bloom every year...it is ususally best to wait until 2-3 wks after they bloom before cutting them back....in no time at all they will start growing again...REMEMBER SET YOUR MOWER DECK AS HIGH AS IT WILL GO
Reply:NO,NO,NO
If you do, they'll most likely die. The guy who's dad mowed them was probably mowing daffodils (still not a good idea)
Irises are great because the foliage looks great, plant annuals around them.
Reply:I don't think that I would mow them for asthetic
reasons. I have gobs of iris all over my backyard and I simply let them go away. If they really bother you after blooming, once they're all dry, you can rake them.
Reply:My dad would always mow ours down after they got through blooming and they would come back every year pretty than ever.
