If the eye sufferd a thermal burn from extreme heat how would you know if the iris was damaged?
you might need someone's help here.
in a dark room, use a pen torch/any small light source to shine towards one of your eye from about an inch away (indirectly, at an angle). observe to see if the pupil constricts (becomes smaller). swing the worch to the other eye and check for the same reaction.
it should both constrict under normal circumstance. also, the pupil should be perfectly round. oval or irregular might indicate some form of damage.
you might also want to look if there is a difference in iris colour.

If he has always had this, then it is a developmental issue, the sclera, or white part of the eye, when missing some of the white tissue, will appear brown. Not to worry! Does not need to be fixed.

Today is the day for me to ask music questions I guess! Does anyone know Iris Dement? She's kinda "folky".

What does it mean if you have gray rings in the outer edge of your iris?
My eyes are normally green, but today I noticed the edge of the colored part is somewhat gray. I'm not taking any type of medication, but if it matters, I haven't really slept much in the past week. My friend told me it could be a copper buildup due to some disease, but he didn't really know much.

I'm not sure if it can permanently be restored, but if it can I'm sure it would be an expensive surgery. The other option would be colored contact lenses. They can enhance or even change your normal eye color. Some brands are: FreshLook ColorBlends and Acuvue 2 Colours.

How do you get larger eyes without makeup? And is it possible to get bigger iris through plastic surgery?
I want to have large natural looking eyes, without doing any make-up. I am willing to pay for any surgery cost... but is it safe?

Why dont you just use make - up? Why would you want to go under the knife for bigger eyes?
All you have to do is use black eyeliner on top of youe eyelid - never on the bottom lid because that will mkae your eye look smaller and apply brown/black mascara on your top and bottom lashes - apply as much as you'd like - I perfer lots and lots of coats of mascara but I can still make it look natural by apply the mascara carefully and getting rid of the CLUMPS - just do this, your eye will come out gorgeous! Mascara can do WONDERS to your eyes, promise me that you'll try this BEFORE you consider getting surgery - because I know you'll like it. Theres nothing wrong with wearing some eye make-up as long as you don't over do it - you'll still look natural and great.

Good question. Brown eyes have brown pigment, of course. Blue eyes have little or no pigment. It's an evolution thing. People who's ancestry goes back to areas around the equator developed brown pigment to help reduce the more direct and brighter sunlight that can damage eyes. Northern Europeans, who evolved higher up on the planet, where the sunlight is less intense, had no need for the adaptation.

Conversely, someone of african descent commonly has very dark eyes, due to the levels of melanin affecting their skin and eyes. This is why certain eye colors are associated with certain ethnicities. (Sorry to say, but the answerer above me is wrong about brown pigment. Brown eyes just have a lot more melanin. There is no brown, blue, or green pigment)
As for which colors I find pleasing, I find it has more to do with how much light reflects (bright, dark eyes) out of their eyes than the actual color, or in other words, how much of the color you can see.

You need to take outside or in a Frontroom with Large Picture Windows (no Drapes or Shades) Then your camera will decide it is light enough and will not flash. If your camera still flashes you can take a small piece of tissue and place over the flash giving it a very soft flash but you still we need plenty of light in the room to make sure her blue eyes show.

Your eye color ever change?Why lighter and lighter than my childhood dark brown iris?
I think it's too much TV watching and computer screen staring and contact lens wearing, but my eyes used to be DARK brown colored almost black. Throughout puberty, it lightened. It now lightened to nearly hazel/yellowish hue but specks of dark still can be observed if stared in the right angle lines etc. the lighter hue is in the inner part with the dark circle/ring around it. totally diff from pics when i had as a young boy. seem to lose my childhood's innocent bright-eyed look but with a more devilish side too it now..., , especially bloodshot at times and permanent purplish blood vessels very noticeable when peeling the eyelids to show more whites of the eye. even when i sleep a lot the red only subsides a bit, I wish i had my childhood's pure midnight ~blackish eyecolor back when it was much more uniform. At this rate, they'll be golden/yellow/amber within 5-10s years, already light to medium brown.

Thanks for the responses, but I should add the gray ring does not go away. I was involved in a car accident some ten years ago. I wear glasses because of it, and my vision is blurred most of the time. My doc said "It's a sign of age." I am only 55. age my ****. I am very nervious of doctors (I wonder why).

My eye colors are gradually changing. Why lighter than my childhood dark brown iris?
I think it's too much TV watching and computer screen staring and contact lens wearing, but my eyes used to be dark brown colored. Throughout puberty, it lightened. It now lightened to nearly hazel/yellowish hue but specks of dark still can be observed if stared in the right angle lines etc. the lighter hue is in the inner part with the dark circle/ring around it. totally diff from pics when i had as a young boy. seem to lose my childhood's innocent bright-eyed look but with a more devilish side too it now..., , especially bloodshot at times and permanent purplish blood vessels very noticeable when peeling the eyelids to show more whites of the eye. even when i sleep a lot the red only subsides a bit, I wish i had my childhood's pure midnight ~blackish eyecolor back when it was much more uniform. At this rate, they'll be golden/yellow/amber within 5-10s years, already light to medium brown.

I don't think it will get to the point where it turns into a yellowish amber for you; it should stop at just being hazel or light brown. But, if you're that concerned, then just see a specialist.

Reply:Won't answer them all, but Vulcanization comes from the Greek god Vulcan, who (if I remember correctly) was a blacksmith or something like that. Anyways, thats where vulcanize (as in rubber) comes from. Sorry details sketchy.

Human Teeth
Is there any way to keep moles/voles from eating newly planted dutch iris bulbs?? Does anything repel them??
There's only one thing that works. I plant my bulbs in wire mesh. I dig a hole and then line it with the mesh and let it stick up above the ground about an inch. I buy the mesh they sell to cover gutter from leaves. They work really well. Moles do not eat plants only worms and grubs. Voles are your problem. You'll never kill them and even catch them. I've been trying for twenty years now. The only way to get rid of both is to get a cat.

Is there going to be a sequel to the book Countdown by Iris Johansen?
The book Countdown was pretty good, but the way it ended I'm not sure if I should expect a sequel or not. They didn't find the gold and some things were left unexplained.

I'm needing some tips on planting some hummingbird vines and wild iris seeds?
We have honeysuckle on our fence that draws lots of hummers each spring and summer. If you have lots of rainfall in your area (zone), the honeysuckle can get out of hand. But if you live with dryer summers, the honeysuckle will not give you trouble.

Iris.. cuz thats my name In Greek mythology, Iris was the daughter of Thaumas and the ocean nymph Electra and one of the Oceanids (according to Hesiod), the personification of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. As the rainbow unites Earth and heaven, Iris was the messenger of the gods to men; in this capacity she was mentioned frequently in the Iliad, but never in the Odyssey, where Hermes takes her place. She is married to Zephyrus, god of the west wind.
Iris is represented as a youthful virgin, with wings of gold, who hurries with the swiftness of the wind from one end of the world to the other, into the depths of the sea and the underworld. She is especially the messenger of Hera, and is associated with Hermes, whose caduceus or staff she often holds. By command of Zeus she carries a ewer of water from the Styx, with which she puts to sleep all who perjure themselves. Her attributes are the caduceus and a vase. She is also represented as supplying the clouds with the water needed to deluge the world. Iris is the personal messenger of Hera, queen of the gods and is Hera's go-between from Mount Olympus to the mortal world.
The word iridescence is derived in part from the name of this goddess.

irises dont dry well, roses you can hang upside down and dry, and make arrangements with them or use them on wreathes, if you have lots of loose petals you can put them in clear jars and turn them into potpourri with rose oil. you can put dry rose petals into paper pulp if you make your own paper, you can press pansies very well and make stationery or greeting cards with them, also seperating the petals of batchleors buttons make good petals for pressing and putting into paper pulp, you could mix them into wax and make candles, you could mix them into soap and mold bars of glycerine soap with your rose petals in them. you can also cook your rose petals, in a cast iron pan and roll the mush into beads and dry them, they smell rosey for years.

What I remember is that there are two agents (I want to say FBI) in a topless bar, one is undercover and his partner (I think he might be wearing a cowboy hat and boots) needs to get him a message. The partner is too well known so he can't walk up and give it to the undercover. A woman that usually works behind a desk (at the FBI?) ends up relaying the message to the undercover. In order to blend in she goes in topless and poses as a waitress. The real waitresses get mad at her for stealing their tips so she makes up a story of how she and her boyfriend are pulling a prank on a friend. After relaying the message she and the partner leave the bar but the partner gets a funny feeling. I don't remember if there was a sniper or a bomb or what. That is all I can recollect. I'm really interested in reading the rest of the novel so if you could help me out I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Your iris gets its colour from the pigment 'melanin', the same substance that gives colour to your skin.
In your skin you can get collections of melanin containing cells. This is what we call a 'naevus' or mole.
Similarly if excessive melanin cells pile up at one point on the iris you can get an iris-naevus or mole.
Most moles do not merit much attention or treatment. Its only when they CHANGE that they need to be checked out. Remember ABCD:
A - asymmetry: half of the mole is different from the other half.
B - border Irregularity: uneven edges
C - colour: uneven
D - diameter: large size or increasing size.
Of course this mole being inside your eye, its not easy to monitor all this.
So here's your bottom-line:
- see your optometrist/optician
- they will look at your mole under microscope and record (or take a photo of the baseline appearance)
- they will follow it up over months or years
If your mole shows any of the ABCD you will be referred to an ophthalmologist for their opinion, otherwise you have absolutely no need to worry!

to be honest..i don't think the goo goo dolls could come any closer to iris. it's just an amazing song..and many bands have attempted to sound like that song but it just doesn't work. but these songs are kinda close and they are lyrically and vocally great.

There's nothing you can give them as an antidote at home. Call your vet. If they've eaten them very recently then it may just be a case of giving them something to make them sick If it's too late for that then a close eye will need to be kept on them and symptomatic treatment given as needs be.

Yes, it is. Since an eye operation as a child I have had one blue eye and one green eye. It's quitre common following accidents too as it changes the way light reflects off the cornea.

If the iris has been pollinated, these are actually the seedpods.
You can let them dry out, open them up, and and plant the seeds inside them, but you don't know what color or 'variety' your irises will be, since they have probably been cross-pollinated by the bees. This is how the hybridizers grow iris, they plant the seeds, however, they usually cross pollinate by hand and then puit a bag around the flower so it won't cross pollinate with other irises.
If you want to try growing irises from seed, it may take three or four years to get one to bloom, since most irises are grown by dividing the rhizome (bulb).

After the blooms have all died down but before fall so the rhizomes have time to re-root before winter. July should be good, while the sun is hot.
My process ( I had a lot of iris): Dig up the rhizomes, clean off the dirt. I used a dremel tool with a cut-off disc on them to zip off the tops of the leaves. Leave about 8 inches or so in the middle of each fan, tapering down to about 4 inches on either side. Then separate the rhizomes so each fan has it's own rhizome. Use a sharp knife and cutting board. Breaking them apart leaves ragged edges that can cause problems.
Then I dip the whole thing in clorox water (1 cup clorox bleach to 1 gallon water) and put them out in the sun to dry. You can leave them in the sun for a couple days till they are all dry. This will prevent any infection in the newly cut surfaces.
Then plant them, not too deep since iris like the sun on their rhizomes. Water them but don't flood. There you go! All done.

I went to my neurologist a few years ago complaining of migraine; he performed an overall check up and found that my pupil's dialated and contracted constantly, even without his little flashlight. He told me the name of what was happening, but in that time I've forgotten it. Please, even if you have two cents to put in it would help.

However if you live in the southern states just find some that you like and ask the owner if they plan on "splitting" them and would they mind sharing with you. My mother has a whole lot of iris flowers that she was given by friends, family, and strangers that became friends.

You CAN, but they won't bloom until the next year. They should really be planted in the fall, though.

What is the cause of a white milky ring around the iris? I was told it is a sign of high cholesterol?
My dad has it - he has high cholesterol, diabetes (probably pancreatis - always complaining about a pain in his left side) He also suffers from gout and arthritis - told him yesterday if he had been a dog we would have had him put down! Oh the joys of getting older. He drinks/drank too much - only English beer (3%) but I suppose over a period of 45yrs it catches up on you! His love of fried food and red meat can't have helped.

I have some planted in a part of my yard that is too shady, would like to put them where they will get more sun.

I have dozens of iris all over my property. I dig them up and move them all year long (unless the weather's freezing, of course). Iris are tough, and they'll forgive you for moving them.
Be sure to leave a little of the top of the "bulb" (rhizome) exposed when you replant them, as sunshine on the rhizome is what prompts iris to bloom.
Reply:Iris actually "rhizome" instead of true bulb. If you wait until they look really daggy - like the end of summer or autumn, then dig them up, that is the best time. Be delicate by using a garden fork so you don't break the rhizome too much. Before transplanting, cut the leaves back to only a few inches above the rhizome. Another tip is to plant them well spaced in the new sunny location, with part of the rhizome above the soil. It is the sun on the rhizome "suntanning it" which helps Irises flower.

It's on the inside of your iris and it is the ciliary muscle that controls the shape of the lens. The color comes from melanocytes that make the color darker or lighter

HELLLO i have a black spot right above my right iris. i was scared at first but i just noticed that it has?

Is it on the actual pupil (darkest center) or on the brown part surrounding that?
Spots on the iris aren't a big deal. Mine green and are speckled with a few black spots. I don't know how you would notice one on your pupil though.
I would say don't worry, but no harm going for an eye exam. Good luck!
