What is the cause of a white milky ring around the iris? I was told it is a sign of high cholesterol?

My dad has it - he has high cholesterol, diabetes (probably pancreatis - always complaining about a pain in his left side) He also suffers from gout and arthritis - told him yesterday if he had been a dog we would have had him put down! Oh the joys of getting older. He drinks/drank too much - only English beer (3%) but I suppose over a period of 45yrs it catches up on you! His love of fried food and red meat can't have helped.

PS I don't think the answerer above understood that you meant the ring around the iris.

See this site all about irises

yeah true

it is called xanthelasma a flat, yellowish growth on the outside of the eyelid, usually close to the nose. These noncancerous blemishes are composed of fatty material, and are usually a warning sign of high cholesterol levels.

Although an underlying cholesterol problem can lead to heart disease if left unchecked, the xanthelasma itself poses no danger. It is typically removed only for cosmetic reasons. Even after removal, however, the growth may reappear.
