Why does the iris tissue look shriveled?
The iris is the equivalent of the 'aperture' in a Camera. What does the aperture of the camera do? It lengthens and contracts. The iris too, shrinks to increase the aperture and expands to decrease it. To allow for the expansion, the iris has some 'flab' or 'looseness' in it that allows this expansion.
