Use a small weeding fork and dig out weeds around iris making
sure to get all the roots and be careful not to damage the iris.
Repeat this procedure every time they grow. (It is tedious but
it is a very organic way of doing it)
Don't forget to put on a layer of mulch down after weeding as that will help to keep the weeds down for a while.
Another alternative is to cut PVC plastic sheeting and cut
around where the plants would be and cover with dirt/mulch
so you cannot see it and this smothers the weeds and
blocks out the light.
How can I permanently get rid of weeds in iris beds without harming the iris?
Pull them out by hand.
Reply:You can not get rid of them permanently nothing and I repeat nothing will keep them out without some sort of maintenance program.
Reply:I would pull them by hand and then put some landscape fabric down. This will be hard to do if the weeds have already over taken the beds. But well worth the time .
Reply:No matter what you do, you will have to do some weeding to remove the existing weeds. Then you need to prevent new weeds from growing.
Instead of using landscape fabric, which is a plastic product, I have found that using about 10 sheets of newspaper under the mulch really works to smother the weeds and prevent them from germinating.
I use plain black and white newspaper, not the slick advertising or magazine sections. Then I put down bark or chipped trees as mulch. I can get mulch free for the taking from the local utility company because they are always trimming trees to keep the lines clear, and they chip the cuttings.
I lay down the newspaper and mulch once a year. It's totally biodegradable and makes the soil richer when it decomposes.
Happy gardening!
Reply:Pull every weed that you can see. Then put down organic mulch. There will still be some weeds that will come through, but pull them out before they go to seed. You will eventually get them all. I hope this helps.
