What does the song "Iris" mean sung by the goo goo dolls?

The song was written specifically for the movie City Of Angels. The Meg Ryan character is NOT named Iris. John Rzeznik, the lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls and the writer of the song, sometimes has a hard time knowing what to name songs. He was looking through the newspaper and saw a show ad for a singer named Iris Dement. He figured the name "Iris" was as good as any. :) John Rzeznik was shown the movie and wrote the song from the perspective of the character played by Nicholas Cage; supposedly, the song was written in a single evening and helped Rzeznik overcome a serious case of writer's block.

Hope this helps!
