Why is the Goo Goo Dolls song titled 'Iris'?

"And I don't want the world to *see* me"

As in you see out of your iris.

?

Iris

The colored part of the eye is called the iris. It controls light levels inside the eye similar to the aperture on a camera. The round opening in the center of the iris is called the pupil. The iris is embedded with tiny muscles that dilate (widen) and constrict (narrow) the pupil size.

The sphincter muscle lies around the very edge of the pupil. In bright light, the sphincter contracts, causing the pupil to constrict. The dilator muscle runs radially through the iris, like spokes on a wheel. This muscle dilates the eye in dim lighting.

The iris is flat and divides the front of the eye (anterior chamber) from the back of the eye (posterior chamber). Its color comes from microscopic pigment cells called melanin. The color, texture, and patterns of each person's iris are as unique as a fingerprint.

Why is the Goo Goo Dolls song titled 'Iris'?
This is about a person with an invisible identity who no one understands. Then, he finds true love. He wants his true love to know that he exists and that she is the only person in the world who can understand and love him - hence the last line, "I just want you to know who I am." The title means this is how I see you and me and everyone. In Greek mythology, Iris was the god messenger who left her messages in a rainbow.
Reply:my guess has something to do with the whole i dont want the world to see me part. considering the iris is a part of the eye.

Reply:Origins and theme

The instrumentals in the song are heavily driven by guitar riffs and cellos, with a steady drum beat beneath. The theme of these lyrics ties in directly to the film, in which an angel falls in love with a mortal woman, and can only stay with her by giving up his angelic nature and becoming mortal.

It was the first song that the Goo Goo Dolls had been asked to write specifically for a film. Songwriter Johnny Rzeznik has been quoted as saying he broke several years of writer's block and several years of sobriety simultaneously the night he wrote this track.

In the music video the band is shown high up in skyscrapers, watching the lives of people through telescopes. Seen throughout the video is the actor Nicholas Cage. This theme reflects on what the angels do in the film. Interspersed throughout the video are clips from the film depicting scenes where Seth is falling in love and deciding whether or not to give up being an angel.

The song was named "Iris" by guitarist/vocalist John Rzeznik for Iris DeMent. Rzeznik found her name while flipping through a magazine, and thought it was a nice name, so he chose it for the song. Prior to this, some fans of the song have speculated that the title refers to the Greek messenger of the gods, Iris. This is thought supposedly because some angels are considered messengers and this song was written for the movie City of Angels (in which the main character is an angel).
Reply:Well, that my friend is a very good question.... well maybe it has something to do with Classical Mythology like a messenger of the gods, regarded as the goddess of the rainbow. That is what Iris literary means so when he sing, "... and I don't want the world to see me..." he sending her a message or it can mean a flower petal.

But then again if you watch the movie it was made for, City of Angels, then you'll get it.

Sorry I couldn't be of much help!
