should i pinch off each blossom as they die or wait until all the flowers on each stem die and then trim it back? also, when should i trim back the leaves if at all? i haven't trimmed the leaves once since i planted them three yrs ago and they have increased in size and ground coverage by 10 times.
How do i trim my iris?
Cut off dead blossoms and dead bloom stalks when the iris has stopped blossoming, but don't cut back the leaves until they begin to turn brown in the fall. The leaves are needed to produce next year's blooms. When you do cut, leave a fan shape about six inches long. Feed your irises a teaspoon of bone meal every fall and when you replant. You can feed again a month before they usually bloom if you like, but they are quite tolerant of just one feeding.
Reply:I cut everything off as soon as they are done blooming. I have other, later bloomers, that get shut off by the big leaves. I have had the same iris for 5 years, with no problems.
Reply:you should dig up %26amp; seperate your iris and trim the fan back every couple years, make sure that you fertalize when you transplant do not cut stems untill all blossems have been spent, unless your going to use them in a flower arrangment.
you can refer to the western gardeners book for more info.
